Refurbishment of Single Point Mooring (SPM).

The SPM is an offshore unit, used for offloading crude oil from Tankers and subsequently transferring to a major Storage Terminal. MSL were appointed mechanical contractor for the entire mechanical refurbishment and upgrade of the 300tonne SPM.

Key features of the project included the following:

Contract Duration: 12 Weeks

The SPM was towed from its offshore location to MSL’s premises in Cork, where it was lifted ashore for the works to be completed and subsequently refloated for relocation to its offshore site.

The refurbishment work scope consisted primarily of the following:

  • Replacement of 24 inch Turntable Piping & PLEM Manifold Piping.
  • Replacement and rotational alignment of Central Piping Unit.
  • Replacement of Ancillary Steelwork, including Jib Crane, Water Barrage, Mooring Platform, Launch Platform, Mooring Bridles, Anodes etc.
  • Fabrication of temporary Mooring Supports and Shipping Counterweight Structures.
  • Inspection – 100% NDT was required on this project for both structural and process pipe welds. In excess of 95 number 24 inch (and over) heavy wall pipe welds (19mm to 30mm wall thickness) were completed by MSL.
  • 100% NDT was undertaken, with the acceptance criteria required being Severe Cyclic Conditions. This acceptance criterion allowed for zero imperfections in each weld.     MSL achieved a 0% failure rate on all project welds.

Direct Labour Hours: A total of 11,000 direct labour hours were expended on the project.
